Target Your Market

Define your target market before kicking off your photo contest. A contest for families who enjoy camping is going to look a lot different than couples who look for new and exciting places to visit in the city. Determine who you intend to engage with, and gear your contest toward them.

Team Up

Finding a partner for your Instagram photo contest can be a benefit for both businesses. Not only can you gain more followers through this method, but you’ll also receive additional exposure. Most of these types of partnerships require participants to be followers of both accounts before they can enter. Keep things simple though. There’s no need to team up with more than one business per contest.

Avoid Confusion

Call to Action

Provide your followers a clear call to action, so that they are fully aware of the necessary steps required to enter the contest. The primary purpose of your photo contest is to gain followers or increase your exposure (but make sure you have fun too!). The two most common ways to go about doing this is to have contestants tag a friend or post a picture.

Tag a Friend – For this type of call to action, have participants tag a friend to enter the contest. When the friend sees your post and competition, they will join and tag more friends.

Post a Photo – Contestants with this type of call to action post a photo and use a specific hashtag to enter. This will allow you to track the entries, and pick a winner when the time comes.

Keep an Eye on Submissions

This is your contest, so it would behoove you to be aware of how it’s progressing. Decide how you’ll monitor your contest, whether manually or by using one of the many tools available for just such an occasion. Decide beforehand how you plan on following your contest, so you’re not scrambling to decide while submissions are rolling in.

Declare a Winner

When your contest comes to a close, it’s time to pick a winner. Some contests use a poll, while others may use a group of judges. No matter what method you choose, select a winner and notify them through Instagram.

Promote the winner on your Instagram page, but don’t forget to give credit where credit is due. Cross-promote on other platforms. Announce the results on your Twitter, Facebook, and web pages as well.

Repeat as Needed

Running an Instagram photo contest doesn’t have to be a one-time occurrence. You can have a weekly or monthly contest. Explore your options, find what works best for your company and adjust as needed. Discover a way to build habits with your followers while creating momentum with your contests.

Why People Share: The Psychology Behind Social Media

Social media has taken the internet by storm. There are 31.25 million Facebook messages, 347,222 tweets, 17,361 LinkedIn profile views, 48,611 Instagram pictures, and 300 hours of YouTube videos uploaded each minute. The internet is full of content that’s constantly being created or shared.

We already know what is happening, but let’s dig a little deeper and get to the “why” of it. Why do people love sharing on social media? What’s the psychology behind it?

As luck would have it, a study by the New York Times Consumer Insight Group found the answer for us. Researchers concluded that there were five major reasons why people share on social media:

Entertainment

Perhaps this is the most obvious answer, but it was also the least common reason out of the five. Everyone loves a good dog video or a funny prank that they can laugh at and share with their friends. After all, what is the internet for if not entertainment?

Less than half of shares are motivated by entertainment or passion. Nevertheless, it does explain the tendency for funny YouTube videos to go viral as people want all their friends to see it.

Supporting a cause

It’s almost impossible to go onto social media and not see someone talking about a cause they are passionate about. The study found that 84% of respondents use social media to share their support for a social cause. Whether it’s fighting against immigration bans or police brutality, social media remains a powerful tool for expression.

A perfect example of this would be the Ice Bucket Challenge. Politicians, celebrities, athletes, and hundreds of others all participated in this viral challenge which helped raise over $130 million for various ALS organizations.

Self-Fulfillment

Related to the above point, many people share on social media to feel good about themselves. A simple click of a button can let all your Facebook friends know how they can best provide relief to hurricanes or donate to their local homeless shelter.

Sure, some might call it slacktivism, but it’s hard to overlook just how excellent social media is for raising awareness of important causes. It’s an easy way for people to make themselves feel better while fighting for a good and noble cause.

Expressing Yourself

The study found that 68% of respondents love sharing things that they feel helps them express who they are. Whether someone is showing the world their love of dogs or how excited they are for the latest blockbuster summer hit, there’s something that just feels good about expressing yourself. No places are as good at showing someone’s uniqueness as social media.

It only takes a few clicks to let the world know who you are and what you like. Many people don’t have the chance to divulge such details about themselves in the regular world, so social media provides a wonderful vehicle where they can truly be themselves without fear of judgment or restriction.

Friendship

This last point takes us to the social aspect of social media. More and more people are making new friends and connections online. It doesn’t matter if you’re finding your next hot date on Tinder or connecting with a potential new business partner on LinkedIn—social media and the internet has made meeting new people much easier than ever.

According to the study, 78% of respondents share on social media to keep in touch with old friends. It makes sense when you consider that the vast majority of Facebook friend lists are people that most users never keep in touch with. Sharing content allows them to reconnect with those who they haven’t talked to in a while and rekindle old friendships.

Conclusion

It’s impossible to deny the massive influence that social media has in our current day and age. The influence of companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram also allows brands to capitalize on new opportunities as they can reach people who are just casually scrolling through pages from the comfort of their phone.

Take a look at your content and ask how it plays in to one of these five psychological factors. You never know what sort of marketing strategies might arise after a little bit of introspection. Online Marketing Myths You Probably Believe

Marketing online is already incredibly difficult. Sure, you have the entirety of the internet to appeal to, but it also means that you’re competing against countless other online marketers. The internet is a vast place and standing out against a sea of competitors isn’t an easy feat, but a successful online marketing campaign can easily bring you the customers you’re looking for.

Unfortunately, many marketers are far too misguided about what they think works and doesn’t work on the internet. Many marketers go barking up the wrong tree so to speak and end up wasting time and resources on fruitless endeavors. Here are just a few commonly held myths that end up hurting marketers:

Myth #1: We need to be on as many social media platforms as possible.

It’s true that you certainly want to get your message out to as many people as possible, but not all audiences equally deserve your attention. There are countless social media platforms to take advantage of–Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.—but that doesn’t mean you need to use all of them.

Each social media platform has a different audience and those audiences are all interested in different things. Do you think a company like Tastemade that markets by making cooking videos would have as much success on LinkedIn as they do on Facebook? Would a company for elderly people like Life Alert want to market on Snapchat where 71% of its members are under 34?

Rather than trying to spread yourself thin, choose the most ideal platforms and focus your efforts there. You can expand your marketing efforts when you can acquire more overhead, but it’s best to play to your strengths while still starting out.

Myth #2: My company needs to be #1 on SEO results for important keywords.

SEO can be a difficult game to play and it’s never easy to get to the top of a Google search for popular keywords. For example, if you are running a shoe store, it would be very nice to be the first result when someone types “shoes” into Google.

However, it might be more beneficial and realistic to aim for mastering long tail keywords—that is longer and more specific phrases. Long tail keywords make up 70% of Google searches and generally indicate that a consumer is more willing to convert and purchase than a short tail generic search.

For example, “shoes” is a short tail keyword that might be used for someone who’s simply browsing the internet while someone who uses long tail keywords like “black dress shoes,” “good running shoes,” “cheap sneakers,” or “sandals for summer” are probably ready to buy.

Myth #3: This other company is doing it, so, why can’t we?

It’s tempting to look at successful companies and try and imitate what they’re doing. Sometimes it works such as when Instagram copies Snapchat’s story features and ended up beating Snapchat at their own game. However, this isn’t always the case.

Take the example of the Amazon Fire Phone: Amazon’s short-lived attempt at entering the smartphone market. The phone’s multiple flaws and inability to stand up to Samsung or Apple means that its obituary was written rather quickly. On the other hand, Amazon has been instrumental in killing Borders and has companies like Sears, Macy’s, and Best Buy on the ropes.

The takeaway is that what works for one company doesn’t work for everyone else. If it did, every company would be doing the same thing. You have a different audience, different brand, different mission, and a different set of values. Find your own unique voice.

Myth #4: Email is dead. Long live the new social media king.

Social media might be the new big thing, but don’t count out email just yet. Believe it or not, a study from McKinsey & Company found that companies acquire new customers via email 40 times more than they do on Facebook and Twitter combined.  The study also found that 91% of consumers check their email every day, make purchases three times more often via email than via social media, and that they order 17% more when ordering via email.

Clearly, there is a lot of misinformation in the air as to how online marketing should be done. Knowing what works and what doesn’t work can mean the difference between life and death for your company. For more handy internet marketing tips, check out my done-for-you system.

Bait and switch offers in internet marketing…

By far, the number one complaint I hear from people online is they get pummeled with different make-money-online
offers which promise the world for free… only to be disappointed when they ask for payment at the end.

I saw one of these myself the other day. It said, ‘no credit card required’ right there on the sales page, and then at the end lo and behold, an order form appeared for $197.

Now don’t get me wrong. I have no problem with paying for good training, but when they outright lie about it being free, I get annoyed.

It does promise a lot, but it delivers. At the end you can get started for free, as long as you meet the qualification requirements.

They are not hard to meet; you just need to be willing to invest at least 30 minutes a day into the training, work with your personally
assigned coach, and take this training seriously.

All I left with was a $25,000 student bill.

This is a true story from my Mentor Matt Lloyd founder of Mobe. This is so true! I was a former student loan debt counselor, so I truly can attest to this!

Yesterday while paying for some snacks at a store here at the Hilton Fiji, I noticed this book on sale:

So I bought a copy, then started flicking through.  It’s actually a decent book.  In the first chapter, the author talks about the value of getting an MBA, and how overall he thinks its both a waste of time and money.

So I thought I’d share my take on this with you today;  do you need to have a degree or MBA to do well in your own business?

And should you encourage your kids, or grand kids, to go to university if they want to start a business?

My answer is, ‘it depends,’ with a strong lean towards ‘No.’  If you want to do well with your own business, a degree or MBA counts for virtually nothing.

Let me explain…

I spent close to 4 years at university.  It wasn’t an Ivy league school or anything like that, but, is considered one of the top universities in Australia, and definitely the top one in my home city of Perth.

My initial degrees were going to be Philosophy and Psychology.

Then after a year I changed to business and psychology.

Then after another year, I changed to business and economics.

In my fourth year I got into the world of internet marketing, and decided it was time to start my own business.

I had 2 options;

1.) Work on my business part time, a few hours a day, and finish my degrees so I’d have something to ‘fall back on’ if my online business didn’t work out.

2.) Quit university, get no degrees or anything to show for the past 4 years, but I could at least focus full time on building my business and become successful much faster.

Patience is something i have a very short supply of, so I chose option 2.

All I left with was a $25,000 student bill.

Of course, my parents were not thrilled.  They said, “at least finish your studies so you have something to fall back on if the online business thing does not work out.”

I knew that was flawed thinking though.  If I approached my business with that mentality, I was doomed the fail from the start.  I had to be ‘all-in’ or nothing for it to work.

But boy, did I start learning fast.

In those first 24 months of being in the trenches, I learned far more than I had in the previous 4 years of university.

Very little of what I learned at university has helped me succeed in the business world.

If I could go back in time to 2009, instead of going to business school I’d go buy a bunch of great business books and study them instead, and then immediately begin building my business.

Nothing will ever take the place of real-world experience, and learning lessons through making a lot of mistakes.

To spend 3 or 4 years of your life at university carries an enormous opportunity cost with it for real-world learning.

Now, does this mean that I’m totally against going to business school and getting a degree if you plan to be a business owner?

No, not completely.  There are some useful topics you can learn.  For example, accounting.  I WISH I paid more attention during those Accounting 101 units.  Those are useful skills I really could have used in my business.  Finance 101 also has it’s uses.  Understanding how an asset gets valued from future cash flow streams has its uses, for when you’re deciding which internal projects you should invest in next.

But as far as topics like marketing, and HR, and entrepreneurship – those are topics best learned through experience and a few select books.

Side note:  I think it’s a joke when university’s have classes and majors in ‘entrepreneurship’ being taught by professors who’ve never built successful business’s.  No matter how many biographies and textbooks you read about successful entrepreneurs, you have no right to teach the topic unless you’ve started and scaled a business of your own.

My other big problem with business degrees, is the intent in which students undertake their studies.

Most students study to pass exams and get good grades.  Surface-level understanding.

They don’t study with the primary intention of deep-level understanding, and real world application.

I can’t tell you how many times during my studies I pulled all-nighters, cramming in as many facts and figures into my tired brain for the next mornings exam.

Somehow I’d always get through – occasionally I’d even get good marks.

But 7 days later, I’d have forgotten 90% of what I’d learned.  The knowledge had not sunk in at a deep level.

In the real business world, no one cares about an exam grade.

None of my customers have ever asked to see my degree.

No traffic vendors have ever requested to see my grades.

No super affiliates who promoted my brand and made millions for the both of us wanted to know which university I graduated from.

At the end of the day, the only think that counts in the real world, is you figuring out the answers for yourself and getting results.

The only thing that gets rewarded is knowledge applied in the right areas.

So if you (or someone you know) is dead set on going to university to study business and I can’t talk you / them out of it, my advice is simple:  study for deep level understanding and for real world application.  The exams themselves are less important in the real world than you think.

My final disclaimer here:

All my advice above is for people who want to be real entrepreneurs.

I’m not talking about the ‘entrepreneur on instagram and Facebook’ type (you know the ones, posting about how great their lifestyle is, when the reality is they don’t have a pot to piss in).

I’m talking about those who cannot be talked out of the idea of starting their own business – those who don’t believe in concept of weekends – those who have an obsession with building a massively successful company.

For these people, they just don’t need to go to business university.

Improve Your Email Marketing with a Marketing Funnel

What is a Marketing Funnel?
The idea of a funnel is used to illustrate the process a potential client goes through as they become familiar with your products or services.

Visually, clients enter the funnel at the widest part, the top, then proceed to descend, stage by stage, leaving at the level they lose interest. What you end up with at the bottom are the final few who have purchased and love your product or service. These are the clients that will keep coming back

Your goal is to raise the number of potential clients that enter the top and lower the number that loses interest at each stage.

To accomplish this, you will need to have a conversion tactic for each stage.

There are a few different Funnel maps out there that vary in their vocabulary but each basically means the same thing, for the sake of this article, we’ll go with the following terms:

Awareness
Interest
Conversion
Loyalty
Advocacy
Using Email Marketing to Get a Client All the Way to the Bottom

Now that you understand how a marketing funnel works, let’s discuss email marketing plans for each.

Awareness

The top of your marketing funnel is awareness. This is when the potential client finds out you exist but doesn’t know anything about your product yet. At this level, you should start showing them the value of your product or service. This can be done with free informative content, such as a free eBook on product related subjects.

Interest

At this level, potential clients are starting to show an interest in your company and products and want to know more.

You also know more about the client, which allows you to send them more targeted content that can relate how your product or services can help them. This email could include specific items that you believe will be beneficial to them and even include an invitation to a free consultation or demonstration.

Conversion

Now you potential client is aware of the value of your product or service and it’s time for them to decide if they are ready to purchase.

Here, you start communicating to the client why your product and service is better than your competitors’ and perfect for them.

Loyalty

OK, you’ve made the sale, your potential client has graduated to the title of actual client. Your work is not over, however, not even close.

Now you need to implement your plans to keep them.

Repeat and long term clients are a wonderful asset for any business. Help keep these valuable assets by continually engaging them with fun and useful content such as educational emails related to upcoming products or surveys asking them their opinions on potential changes coming. Make them feel like their opinion really matters to you.

Advocacy

Advocacy happens when your clients turn into your biggest fans.

They’ve probably purchased or used your services several times because they adore you. The best part? They start telling everyone about your and how great your products or services are!

Word of mouth, still the best way to gain more potential clients that will stick.

Now, as you start to recognise these special clients, you can start sending them special requests like emails asking them to refer you to their friends. You could even create a version of your initial email sent to the Awareness level that they can forward to friends and family they think would most benefit from your products or services.

Now you have the information you need to plan your own email campaign and begin to channel your potential clients all the way to being actual clients.

By developing your email strategy with the marketing funnel in mind, you’ll convert more prospects into customers and more customers into fans, which means more money for your business. Yay!

The most in-depth training program on how to make money online today…

If you go to Clickbank or do a quick Google search for different make money online programs, be prepared to be overwhelmed.

There are literally over 10,000 courses and books on this topic.

And even though I haven’t seen them all; I’ve seen a lot of them. Most of them let you down. Not because their training isn’t good,
but because in many cases it’s incomplete. Instead of bringing you clarity, it ends up confusing you even more.

This is where most training products go wrong:

1.) You don’t get to talk to a real person when you take the training

When you’re sitting behind your computer going through a course, you’re going to have questions.

And there’s nothing worse than not being able to understand something you paid good money for, and having no one to speak to for further
clarification.

If you have to go search for answers on Google, then you’re right back where you started; getting presented too much information you can’t
make sense of, and feeling overwhelmed.

2.) Everything is presented all at once

Think back to when you first went to school. Were you immediately presented with 10 or more years of lessons and textbooks at one time?

Of course not, that’d be ridiculous.

You were presented with one lesson at a time.

You had a teacher (I hope) who made sure you understood the current lesson before you were shown the next more advanced lesson.

This way you could understand the foundational concepts before learning the more advanced ones.

Here’s the thing; most people are not great self learners. If you present them with too many videos and lessons in one go, they get overwhelmed and confused.

They don’t know where to start, so often they are just paralyzed and remain stuck.

Because they are not getting any sense of progress along the way, they give up quickly.

Most online courses are like this. You pay the money, get some login details, and are then left to try and make sense of all the training.

In my opinion, the online marketing education world needs a huge shake.

We need to look at the most advanced learning techniques and apply them to our world, so the average person can make sense of all the
lessons and actually get results.

Information should not be presented all in one go; it should be presented in a way where the student can make sense of basic things first, because
being shown more advanced lessons.

3.) They don’t have a proven track record of success (how many people have taken the training, and got results with it?)

If you’re seeing the same generic testimonials for whatever course you’re buying on the sales page, that’s a good clue their training is outdated.

Personally I measure the effectiveness of a training program by how many success stories they’ve created, and how many of them are recent.

When it comes to business, universities like Harvard and Stanford are clearly effective training grounds; they are constantly churning out graduates who
go on to become titans in business and build enormous company’s.

The very best online training programs have also helped create many famous internet marketing gurus, and continue to do so.

4.) They want a lot of money upfront before you get to see any of the proper training

The best online training programs are the ones where the creator is able to make money on the success of the client’s who implement the training.

That way, they have a vested interest in seeing the clients do well, and, can charge less money upfront for access to the training. They earn their profits
when the clients also start earning.
